Your Genetics, Your Destiny?
By:Katie Romano, Fort Myers Certified Hypnotist, Certified Life Coach, LPN and Fort Myers Acupuncturist Dr. David Martin

Nature versus Nurture.

The debate over whether our genetics determine everything from eye color and health, to personality, or whether these things are manipulated by our environment has been raging for ages.   It’s generally accepted that your eye color is indeed genetically determined, though as we move into determining disease and personality, things get a bit more interesting.   The nurture camp has compelling research to support its arguments that far more than DNA is at work in our lives.  In fact, DNA is a mere road map. Each time we make a choice, take a breath of fresh air, a bite of food, etc. we are telling our bodies how to express what’s in our genes.

The Genetic Map-Expressing as You.

Think of your genes as a road map for your body’s development, with multiple paths and multiple destinations.  Furthermore, while each of us has a similar looking map, how we get where we are going is dependant on multiple factors:  The type of fuel we give our bodies, the way we maintain our vehicle, environmental toxins, even our thoughts all influence which roads we travel on and how far we will go. Dr. Roger Williams, a University of Texas biochemist and leading researcher in Functional Medicine, described this as “Biochemical Individuality.”  Commenting on William’s work, Dr. Elina Chernyak, D.O. of Vail, Colorado stated, “The Human Genome Project is permitting us to recognize some unanticipated aspects of molecular genetics and molecular biology. The impact of nutrients on the expression of these genetic characteristics results in our diversified genetic potentials.”

Ready for an anecdote that puts this into a nutshell?  My mom always said that she was grateful there was only one of me, because one was hard enough to keep up with.   Based on Williams’s theories, I have both good and other news for mom.  First, there are more “Mes” deep in my DNA code, the current “me” is only expressing as a bubbly, energetic gal.  In other news, there are also more of my mom, deep in her DNA and maybe if she added more greens to her diet, the current mom could keep up with me!

Mind Blowing New Developments.

Former research scientist and university professor, Dr. Bruce Lipton shares additional insights in his book, The Biology of Belief.  Lipton’s work shows that our genes and DNA do not control our biology.  In fact, DNA is controlled by signals from outside the cell, including the energetic messages emanating from our positive and negative thoughts.    Huh?  How does that work?   Well, biochemically, our thoughts create moods, and the underlying chemicals (called neuropeptides) which are created in our brain to match those moods physically attach to cells and turn a “dial” on the cells which changes their behavior (“expression”)!

Putting It All Together.

These emerging biological breakthroughs put the onus on us (as individuals)to drive– to make the choice to live better  each moment –rather than trying to let our “maps” drive our “vehicles.”  Furthermore, there is no predestined disease out there waiting to claim you unless you continue to feed the part of you that encourages its expression.  Williams shares in his work how micronutrient therapy can reverse many genetic mal-expressions when caught early enough through micronutrient testing and other functional/holistic methods.

If you are still concerned about impending ill-health or disease, I have some parting questions for you:  What are you eating, drinking, touching, breathing, thinking?  Are you exercising?  Did you know that Lotus Blossom Clinic offers free health risk assessments, eating plans, and classes to help you express your very best?  Call us for your appointment:  (239) 277-1399.

What’s Love Got to do with it?

By Fort Myers Hypnotist and Holistic Life Coach Katie Romano and Fort Myers Acupuncturist David Martin

Freud theorized that anxiety is at the root of all disorders. We would like to add a proactive caveat:  Love heals.  We call this healing action, “The Love Factor.”  Just to be clear, love is far more than that super-charged serotonin rush often associated with animal attraction.  It’s more than the pull in your heart that drives many towards greater acts of planetary stewardship when viewing emotion-evoking commercials.  We dedicate today’s issue to: reconnecting, revealing and rediscovering the love in our lives to reclaim optimum life.

So, take a deep breath…

Settle comfortably into your favorite chair…

…and prepare to active that part of yourself that calls to embrace the special something within you that is free and light, peaceful, content and connected to all beings everywhere.

Spiritual teachers, avatars, and poets  have espoused the importance of unconditional love since the dawn of language.  Their teachings and writings are allegorical, metaphorical-moving. Yet, sometimes these great words are lost in translation or seemingly improbable and impractical in today’s day and age.   Furthermore,  quick communications and computer-generated cards, auto-responders on emails  have increased a sense of emotional isolation in many modern men and women.  That said, we invite you to put down your PDA, open your mind and your heart and take in the following strategies, after all-your wellness depends on it!

    Rufus to the Rescue.

Studies all over the world have been conducted which prove that pet owners (or stewards if you prefer) are healthier physically and experience emotional benefits including reduced stress.  Remember Freud’s theory?  Reduced stress is a good thing!  An extra benefit to pet stewardship is an educational perk: our furry, feathery friends teach us about unconditional love. Instinctively they know that regardless of circumstance or temporary feeling, you are worthy of love and joy.   Whether you are feeling joyful or grumpy, they not only forgive and forget they celebrate your very existence!

Rufus has a few other tricks up his sleeve when it comes to loving you:  Doctor Andrew Weil, a forerunner of Integrative Medicine, often recommends getting out in nature for a just a few minutes a couple of times a day .  Rufus provides the perfect impetus to take a break in the fresh air, visit a local park, or even sit in your backyard and unwind after a long day’s work.

    Re-Connect Four.

Remember that game back when you were a kid where you had to get four checkers in a row in order to “win”?  Chances are your best buddy or surly sibling did their best to block you with their own checker pieces, but you persevered and managed to win from time to time anyway.  Well, reclaiming love is a lot like Connect Four.   Making it past email, facebook, and voicemail in order to reach someone and share your feelings in a more personal manner can be a bit tricky (like your big brother). It might even involve a couple of rounds, but the thrill of the win is always worth it.  Your challenge for the next week is to connect or reconnect with four people each day for the next week and document in your journal any changes you notice in your thoughts, your spirit, your health.

    Reclaim love.

The media pitches the notion that real love is wild and reminiscent of emotional swings, passionate embraces, arguments and make-up moments.  Calling on the wisdom of the ancients, we propose another paradigm:  Love begins with an inner sense of peace borne of introspection, meditation, and self-awareness that grows when one complete soul recognizes the beauty and unfolding perfection of another. It is a patient love, that when watered and nurtured grows like a mighty Redwood, thriving over time.  This type of love can be experienced with a life partner, family member, friend or pet.

Here are some tips to reclaim love:

  • Start by taking time for yourself.  3, 1-3 minute daily meditations is a start.  Then try to add some time each week to do an activity you like.
  • Schedule at least one meal a day with the entire family that does not include gameboys, smart phones, or other distractions.
  • Shut off the television and play a board game, or sip a nice herbal tea before bed with your spouse.
  • Block off time to participate in activity alone with your spouse, your friend (s) or family that they enjoy or that you enjoy doing together.
  • Take a clue from Rufus and celebrate the people in your life by re-connecting!  Give them a hug, send them a note, call them!  Let them into your world and your heart.

Really? An Experiment?

I do hereby toss down the gauntlet and challenge ye to commit to making these small lifestyle changes for 30-days. That’s right, 30-days. Studies support that it’s a feasible amount of time to enact lasting changes. Be sure to document  in your journal (just a few sentences) describing your day each night and then give us a call at: 239-277-1399 or email us at:  info@lotusblossomclinic.com to share your successes! We are pledging to give one free treatment or service to all those who tell us how the “Share the Love” experiment has changed their life.  You have everything to gain and nothing to lose. So, in the immortal words of spiritual teacher Mary Morrisey, “It’s your life. Make it a good one!”

14 JulThree Keys to Living the Life of Your Dreams!

Three Keys to Living the Life of Your Dreams!

By Holistic Lifestyle Coach, Katie Romano

In life it is my relationships that I cherish most and my late night conversations with my dearest one is perhaps the most sacred.  Last night he commented that, I “always see the silver lining and just seem to focus on that and let the rest of the stuff just fall away.”  It is his words that have inspired this week’s educational piece. That said: decades of study, meditation and personal development work has led myself and the rest of the Lotus Blossom Team to this joint path of living abundantly and we would like to share our top three keys to living the life of our dreams with you!

Gratitude is an every moment practice.

Pull out a pen and paper and list 5-things that you are grateful for, then come back to this article.  If you can’t think of 5-things at first, start with your breath, your hearing, your beating heart. Then take a minute and really FEEL the experience of gratitude.  As you allow yourself to move into this space your body will respond by releasing chemicals that foster the production of more positive thoughts and with increased positive thoughts comes more positive action. With increase action comes an increase in positive experiences.  Here are some other exercises to boost your gratitude-factor:

1)  Say thank you to someone, or a list of someone(s), everyday.  You can send them a special heart-felt card, email, give them a hug.
2)  Receive a compliment!  How often do we cut down compliments to our appearance, our intellect by making disclaimers related our imperfections?  Try saying, “Thank you!” and allowing that energy of the other person’s words to move into as you breathe that life-giving grateful essence into your being!

Gumption.

Have a goal or an intention for each day that leads to a larger goal. If you can’t think of a “big goal” then your first goal is to find out what your big goal is!  In the movie “Runaway Bride” Julia Robert’s character doesn’t know how she likes her eggs because she had always defined her likes and dislikes by the people around her. To some extent socialization effects us all to varying degrees and so not knowing what you really want is quite common.  So, just as Julia’s character dove in to various versions of a breakfast favorite to discover her tastes, you can dive in to various areas of your life to find out what makes your heart and soul sing–all you need is the gumption to do it and the gratitude for each point of progress!

Gather.

It is often said that we are that our success can be measured by averaging the success of our 5-closest friends.  What company do you keep?  How do your relationships enhance your life and how do YOU enhance the lives of those you touch?  While we are not suggesting you toss out our more precious connections to honor your vision, you may want to take note of your responses and participation in non-optimal interactions and choose accordingly.  Remember to celebrate what IS working in your relationships too!  As your life force expands and your spirit lightens you will begin to up-level everyone in your sphere of influence from grocery clerks to those closest to you!

Finally, in the words of New Thought forerunner Mike Dooley, “Thoughts are Things. Choose the Good Ones.”  That silver lining is much easier to see when you are looking for it.

13 FebReady for Chocolate?

A Holistic Look at Chocolate (Just in time for Valentine’s Day)

By Dr. David Martin Fort Myers Acupuncturist, Lotus Blossom Clinic

For the love of chocolate.

There is a new study out that has again found that chocolate can help prevent strokes.  I am grateful that these studies are being undertaken.  However, I believe that they are misguided because they initiate big headlines like “Chocolate is good for you”, and they come just in time for “Valentine’s Day”.  I also believe that these news articles misrepresent the facts a bit so that they can sell their advertising.

Remember that there are thousands of kinds of chocolate:  It comes in cakes, frosting, bars, squares, drinks, drops, as coatings, in ice cream.   It also comes as dark, white, milk and semi-sweet.  Some of these forms are loaded with sugar and fat.

Lap-band Surgery: Is it the Answer for Obese Adolescents?

Fort Myers Acupuncturist Dr. David Martin and Holistic Lifestyle Coach Katie Romano share their thoughts on this timely issue…

Obesity is like a fire. It is much easier to put out before the whole city is in flames. Unfortunately, dollars are being spent in a reactionary manner versus a proactive manner. For instance, there is a new study from Australia that shows that Lap-band surgery is 10 times more effective than life style changes in obese adolescents.

03 FebOne Call That Can Change Your Life

One Call That Can Change Your Life

In 2007, I received one of those late night calls that everyone dreads. I remember quite clearly jumping out of bed and pacing as I spoke with the paramedic and I shared my father’s medical history. I dropped to my knees barely aware of the cold hard tile they informed me that they were unable to revive Dad. My world rocked on its axis. My family and I—the world—had lost the loving, vivacious, larger than life person that was my father. What’s worse is the knowing that his death could have been prevented. Dad was one of 400, 000 people who died that year from heart disease, and I am to do something about preventing someone else from getting that call.

This year I have resolved to put my years of training in the medical field and as a coach to work to help others to live well and beat this epidemic. Teaming up with Acupuncturist Dr. David Martin, we have developed a program that combines sensible eating, a walking program (and we walk with you!) with acupuncture to control cravings, help you relax and promote wellness. Whether you choose to participate in the IResolve program at the clinic or not, you can join us for walks weekly or start walking on your own (with your doctor’s permission) and join my mailing list for free weekly health tips.
